Intervista con l’On. Salvatore De Meo

Roma, 15 mag. – L’ospite della nuova puntata di Askanews EU Verified Series oggi è l’europarlamentare Salvatore De Meo del gruppo PPE, presidente della Commissione AFCO e membro della Commissione AGRI.
Secondo De Meo il Parlamento europeo dovrebbe ricoprire un ruolo di maggior importanza visto il collegamento diretto con i territori e con gli elettori e avere anche il potere di iniziativa legislativa, come la Commissione. A riguardo è stato richiesto al Consiglio e alla Commissione di avviare una fase costituente ai sensi dell’Articolo 48 del Trattato.

De Meo si mostra poi critico nei confronti dell’approccio ideologico avuto dalla Commissione UE in merito alle questioni legate all’ambiente, soprattutto nella prima parte della legislatura. Servono provvedimenti credibili e non esasperati per creare consenso sulle strategie da seguire. Stesso approccio che è stato seguito dalla Commissione anche su altri temi, come il tabacco: se è condivisibile l’obiettivo di ridurre il tasso di fumatori, bisogna anche tenere in considerazione gli impatti economici. In generale, ritiene sia meglio puntare su prodotti alternativi per sensibilizzare i consumatori sulla necessità di smettere di fumare. De Meo auspica inoltre che per la prossima COP11 ci sia un maggiore coinvolgimento del Parlamento nei processi decisionali in materia e un atteggiamento più trasparente da parte della Commissione.

L’on. De Meo ritiene “condivisibili” anche le proteste degli agricoltori che hanno portato la Commissione a fare un passo indietro, come era stato chiesto dal Parlamento. Agricoltori e ambiente sono alleati non avversari, secondo De Meo, e non bisogna penalizzare il settore con l’iper-regolamentazione soprattutto quando ci sono altri player come Cina, India e Usa, che utilizzano regole meno stringenti dal punto di vista ambientale. Positivo a riguardo il via libera al regolamento sulle indicazioni geografiche, in particolare per il Made in Italy.

Per la prossima legislatura, De Meo ha indicato il programma definito dal Ppe nel Congresso di Bucarest lo scorso marzo che punta a rafforzare la credibilità dell’Unione Europea partendo dall’interno, per affrontare i temi importanti come la neutralità energetica, autonomia alimentare, gestione dei flussi migratori, la creazione di una politica estera comune e un Patto di Stabilità che sia un patto di crescita e non solo di regolamentazione finanziaria ed economica.

The guest of the new episode of Askanews EU Verified Series today is MEP Salvatore De Meo of the EPP group, president of the AFCO Commission and member of the AGRI Commission.

According to De Meo, the European Parliament should play a more important role given the direct connection with the territories and voters and also have the power of legislative initiative, like the Commission. In this regard, the Council and the Commission were asked to launch a constituent phase pursuant to Article 48 of the Treaty.

De Meo then criticizes the ideological approach taken by the EU Commission regarding environmental issues, especially in the first part of the legislature. He argues that credible and moderate measures are needed to build consensus on the strategies to be followed. The same approach has been followed by the Commission on other issues as well, such as tobacco: while the goal of reducing the smoking rate is commendable, the repercussions for the sector must also be taken into account. In general, he believes it is better to focus on alternative products to raise awareness among consumers about the need to quit smoking. De Meo also hopes for greater involvement of the Parliament in decision-making processes regarding the next COP11 and a more transparent approach from the Commission.

De Meo also believes that the farmers’ protests which led the Commission to take a step back, as requested by Parliament, are “shareable”. Farmers and the environment are allies, not adversaries, according to De Meo, and the sector must not be penalized with hyper-regulation, especially when there are other players such as China, India and the USA, which use less stringent rules from an environmental point of view. The green light for the regulation on geographical indications is positive in this regard, in particular for Made in Italy.

For the next legislature, De Meo indicated the program defined by the EPP in the Bucharest Congress last March which aims to strengthen the credibility of the European Union starting from within, to address important issues such as energy neutrality, food autonomy, management of migratory flows, the creation of a common foreign policy and a Stability Pact which is a growth pact and not just a pact of financial and economic regulation.
